I've been busy working on something to make your life a little bit easier when you're shopping for Flexis.

As the end of the year is approaching, we're all thinking about end of year gifts for teachers. We rack our brains to find something that's not another mug...or photo frame...or candle.

What about a Flexi? Get them one that represents the school mascot. They can show their "school pride," as well as keeping that hot hair off their necks all summer!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If you're local to WV, these specifically have the schools named, but I'm sure most schools around the country have the same kind of mascots.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Have you ever uttered those words? Worse yet, have you ever done it?

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I must admit that I did.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I thought what harm could cutting some dead bits off. Maybe it would help my hair grow, as it seems to have stopped growing again. It wasn't as bad as it could be, but now I can't pull my hair back without half of it falling out around my face. I'm still not entirely sure if it's straight in the back, but at least one side isn't 3" shorter than the other. :)

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">But if YOU want to take a go at cutting your hair, here are a few websites with good ideas that you should keep in mind.
I've put in the new logo, doing research on improving blogging, and making it more a reflection of me.

In the past, I tried to be all info, ask the time. And it's hard work for someone who hasn't been trained to work with hair to give advice you've never heard before.

You'll still get that, but you learn more about me, my family, Lilla Rose, and my greatest passion, gishwhes. You'll hear lots more in the coming months.

Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-68627867976776648912015-04-03T13:48:00.000-07:002015-04-03T13:48:04.955-07:00What have I learned the last year...<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I'm sure you've noticed that I haven't been very active lately. After having to cut off almost all of my hair 14 months ago, I sort of lost the motivation to continue with the blog, and Lilla Rose. It's so very very hard to demonstrate how to put a Flexi in your hair when you have none to speak of.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">But I've missed the blog, and Lilla Rose. Right before I had my hair cut off, I won the opportunity to have an absolutely gorgeous graphics package made for Hair Made Beautiful.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I am so very pleased with how it turned out, especially when Lilla Rose wound up changing their branding a bit, and the purple silhouette is used in alot of the newest Lilla Rose marketing.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If you haven't visited my website recently, you really should look to see what's new. There are some very beautfiul new designs, like the Ballerina design or the Star of David.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
Lilla Rose has also brought back former Flexi of the Month styles and added them to be purchased every day!
I recently won a contest at Candycrayon.com, where I got a custom-made logo! I've wanted one forever, but could never afford it. Maribel has worked hard, and I now have something beautiful!

Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-77870670304431341232014-03-02T13:03:00.000-08:002014-03-02T13:03:14.092-08:00You mean your hair isn't supposed to feel like hay?I'm a little over a week out from my haircut, and the beginning of healthy hair.

I've found that my hair doesn't feel terrible to run my fingers through it, and even when I put products on my hair, it's not weighed down as much as it's been in the past.

I'm not sure if the chemical make-up of my hair has changed, or if it's because my hair is so short, I'm always running my fingers through it, but it's very oily. From Scalp to to ends, it's very oily, and it's causing my hair to come up with some strange hair styles. :)

But I also have to say because my hair seems to be rid of that dead stuff, my hair is more prone to do weird things, like get stuck standing up. I think before, my hair was so heavy and unhealthy, no matter how much hairspray, gel, mouse, blow-drying, etc., it would never stand up. It was always weighed down.

This is what Rosa gave me to fix my mess of a mop of hair. Joico's K-Pak Shampoo and Conditioner. These products work to smooth over your damaged hair with Keratin.

I'm also using "It's a 10" mask on my hair for 10 minutes every 4 days. This is what sexy looks like while the mask is on. The great thing.... with the cap, I can wander around my house and vacuum if I feel like it.

And this is my hair, after shampoo, conditioner, mask, Products, and a hair dryer. Yes, I know it looks horrible, but it's entirely user error. I have no idea what I'm doing with short hair, and none of my brushes, heat tools, etc, work with no hair!

know I'm a nut for for Flexis. I'm also wild, daring, and dangerous
when it comes to hair. When I was in my 20s, I would dye, highlight, and
perm my hair at the same time. In my 30s, I've been known to dye my
hair pink.

You know how they say that your hair ages?
It's true! My hair can't take all the chemicals I threw in it when I
was younger. And now I'm suffering. Last Fall, I bleached my hair, and
dyed it pink. I did a bunch of shows, which meant pulling my hair up
in a french twist and letting it down up to twenty times a day. I
literally DESTROYED my hair.

"Destroyed?" you say? "Oh, she just means it's a bit dry and needs moisture."

No,
destroyed ladies. As in my hair went from shoulder-length, to bob, to
pixie cut, to now a bit shorter than a pixie... and then working on getting my hair shafts reconstructed.

So welcome to my newest hair journey.

Samantha Klosterman and Rosa Shull at Kissmett Spa and Makeup Boutique (https://www.facebook.com/KissmettSpaAndMakeupBoutique) (http://www.kissmettspa.com/
) are the lovely ladies who are helping me in this new journey.
They will be helping me stop the damage, repair the damage, and make my
hair healthier and more beautiful than it's been in years!

Kissmett
is in Lovettsville, Virginia, and is a beautiful, make you feel
beautiful spa. Rosa has been with Kissmett for seven years. After one visit with her, I think she's a miracle worker. She has fine hair, like me, and knows the struggles a fine-haired girl faces. She was able to show me tricks that really a grown woman should already know, but apparently I'm a dunce when it comes to haircare tricks. :) Rosa can answer any questions you
have, and was even nice enough to write down the instructions for me so I
can't screw it up the minute I got home. :)

Samantha is
co-owner of Kissmett and makes sure after Rosa makes your hair
beautiful, your nails and face match! I especially love that Samantha
actually makes CUSTOM make-up. If you have oily, dry, or sensitive
skin, she can custom make something that will help your face, not hurt
it, and in the color you want!

After that, you can go
visit Kimberly who can give you the spa experience you love. Massages,
Reflexology Waxing, and they also do Essential Oil Re-alignments! I'm already thinking of an excuse to do Reflexology!

Today
was the day where we looked at the damage, made a plan, and Rosa got all that bad hair off. I'm not sure how she did it...but she cut hair off....but I look like I have more hair than I did when I came in the door!

She's also getting me
started with the perfect shampoo, conditioner, recontructing
treatment and oil to start making my hair the beauty we want it to be.

Rosa told me it may take 6 months to get my hair back to the length it used to be, and she promised me that together I could make my hair pink again if I wanted. *yay* I just need to be closely supervised from now on. ;)

I just noticed that I never got a pic of Rosa and me. That will be corrected. I'm already trying to figure out how to go ghost hunting at her house. ;)

Sooo.... the befores. We didn't get too close when taking the pic but you can tell it wasn't healthy.
With summer comes trips to the pool, day outings, sporting events, etc. And that means, it's time for your hair to take a beating.

All those things you did to protect your hair from the frizzies during the winter? Time to ditch them for new things to do to protect your hair from sun and chlorine.

One suggestion is to find shampoos, conditioners, and products that contain sunscreen. I don't think those items are very common right now, but remember when no one put sunscreen in makeup? I think by next year, it will be more widely available.

Last year was a real reminder that every time you go to a pool, to wash your hair afterward. The chlorine can do a real number on your hair.

And the easiest solution is to do what everyone recommends for everything. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If your body is hydrated, then your hair will be too!Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-90639439536105486042013-04-09T18:23:00.002-07:002013-04-09T18:23:48.900-07:00Autism Awareness Month - Respite Care for Families<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Autism Awareness Month, Day 9

Today, I want to talk about something that is an issue in almost every marriage, and that's the demands of being a parent of a special needs child.

Marriages are tough in the best of circumstances, but consider the demands of trying to work, go to IEP meetings, deal with letters from the school about your child's behavior, meltdowns, cleaning up bits of string because your child has decided he's now going to slowly unravel every pair of socks he owns......

The one thing that parents need is down-time. And it's usually the thing that gets overlooked or sacrificed the most. After all, who is going to care for your child? You can't leave them with someone who is unaccustomed to dealing with aggressive outbursts and meltdowns. You don't want to ask your friends to deal with it.

The thing parents need most is respite care. To have someone come for a few hours once or twice a month, to let you and your spouse get out of the house, have some quiet time, not have to deal with tantrums and fusses, to spend some time alone.

In a recent article at disabilityscoop.com, they talked about the need for respite care and how having that care available can lead to higher marital quality of life. You can read more of the article here -
http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2013/04/08/respite-care-autism-parents/17659/

Remember the Autism Awareness Party is still going on!

Place orders via that link - http://www.lillarose.biz/parties/1745. Right now, this party has no hostess :) For every purchase of a "something blue" item, you will receive one ticket for the Mystery Host Raffle at the end of the party. The more "something blue" purchases, the more chances to win being Mystery Host.

Today's "something blue" is sort of cheating, but oh well. :) It's the Princess Tiara Aurora Borealis!
But for someone who doesn't have a friend or family member affected by autism, sometimes the flurry of words can be confusing.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Stuart Duncan, another friend in the autism community, has posted on his blog a sort of "crash course" for autism. This is Autism, in plain English.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Please take a moment to read about what autism is and isn't, the varying degrees and manifestations of autism, and hopefully understand what our children are going through.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Because both my sons have autism, I am well aware of the challenges of autism and parenting autism children. The goal of Hair Made Beautiful this month is to educate readers on various aspects of autism and the challenges that autistic people, families, and communities face.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The number of people being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder grow every day, and I can guarantee you that even if your family hasn't been affected by autism, you know people whose lives have.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Throughout the month, I'll be continuing you post all types of information about Autism and family dynamics. I encourage you to take the time to read them all. My sincere hope is that you may learn something you didn't know before, or understand where families affected by autism come from, and to increase acceptance of our families.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">To make this a bit fun, I'm also doing a contest with my company, Lilla Rose. There is a special "Autism Awareness Party" set up.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Every day I'll be posting information on Autism, as well as a picture of the day of one of the "something blue" items.
In honor of today, I'd like to share with you a post by an outspoken friend in our community, Rob Gorski at Lost and Tired. Rob is the step-father of three children on the spectrum, all at various places on the spectrum.

Rob wrote a very important article, I think that everyone (whether touched by autism or not) should read. 10 Things My Autistic Kids Wished You Knew.

The Lilla Rose Autism Awareness Party Link - http://www.lillarose.biz/parties/1745
Remember that any purchases of "something blue" made during the Party will give you one ticket for the mystery Host. The more blue items you purchase, the more tickets you earn.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Today's "something blue" is the Starfish Flexi.
Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-68864870711279682522013-04-02T05:47:00.003-07:002013-04-02T05:47:56.026-07:00Hair Tips of the Stars<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I love how everyone and their brother has beauty tips for you. What I found amusing about this article was the title -Jennifer Lawrence’s Hairstylist Spills Top Hair Tips For Real Women.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> Really? Are these affordable options? Because most tips include spending a fortune on products.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I did like this suggestion though, even if it was full of name dropping. "The best way to style naturally curly hair: “I swear by Dove Shine Cream Serum! Actress Penelope Cruz
taught me this trick — rake the product through your curls and do two
braids, one on each side, and let it set for 10 minutes. Take them out
to loose waves.”

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> I did find it interesting, and I know Dove doesn't cost a fortune. I'll definitely try this one!Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-8662976471727229682013-03-30T21:54:00.000-07:002013-03-30T21:54:22.710-07:00Autism Awareness Month

Hair Made Beautiful is working a autism awareness campaign. The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the Autism Society in April 1970. World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2013.

In 1990 the autism rate was 1 in 10,000 school age children. After an updated report released from the CDC, the number is now 1 in 54 students.

Autism awareness is something I am very passionate about. I have twin sons who are on different ends of spectrum. I spend a majority of my time battling with school systems, medical companies, and taking care of my boys.

I've seen the stares directed at me by mothers of "neurotypical" children when my children whine, climb under chairs, and yip. I've felt the judgement. With the numbers of autistic children rising, I want to educate people on autism.

Here's some very basic information on Autism from Autism Speaks.

Throughout the month of April, I will be holding a Lilla Rose Party at my Facebook site. This will be a mystery hostess party, where anyone can win the hostess rewards at the end of the party. How do you become eligible for the Mystery Hostess? You get 1 ticket for each Blue Item you purchase during the party.

To show you the blue items and keep spreading information about Autism Awareness, every day during the party, I will be posting a picture of an item from Lilla Rose that has blue in it and qualifies for tickets to be the mystery hostess. I will also be posting information about Autism and attempting to increase Autism Awareness.
I've tried the foam rollers, that never quite dry your hair enough. I decided if I am go out and represent Lilla Rose, I need thicker hair, hair easier for people to play with.

A few weeks ago, I succumbed to a body perm. It's been really good in being able to pull my hair back quickly for shows and presentations.

But, I have encountered the problems that come from a chemical treatment in my hair....

...... Wait for it .....

Fried ends!

Does anyone have any really good deep conditioning treatments / ideas on how to get plenty moisture back in?Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-39515869192911162302013-03-29T12:36:00.000-07:002013-03-29T12:36:52.445-07:00Giveaway at The Framed Lady<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Great news, I've partnered up with The Framed Lady again for her monthly group giveaway! <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I found a very good article over at Boldsky.com about hair hygiene and every day things you can do to improve your hair.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">One of their suggestions is to massage oil into your scalp. I used to use hot oil all the time when I was younger, but over time I thought it was just a trend, and stopped buying it. No one else ever stressed the importance of hot oil treatments. According to the article, it's not so much oiling your hair that's important, as oiling your scalp. By massaging it into your scalp, you help to dislodge skin particles, which will ultimately wind up as dandruff in your hair.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Another suggestion is to clean your hair tools. I've always heard about cleaning your brush, but did you know you should also clean your combs? That would have never have crossed my mind, but it is something I'll definitely be trying in the future.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">There are a few other suggestions in the article, which make perfect sense, so you should definitely read the article.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">So tell me, do you practice good hair hygiene?Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-42422017470042550372013-03-22T14:36:00.001-07:002013-03-22T14:36:36.765-07:00Keratin Treatments<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">One of the big fads right now is Keratin. All you hear is Keratin this and that. There's even been a case on The People's Court about a failed Keratin treatment (That's when you know you've hit it big) :).
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">BUT, has anyone had one done? If you have, what did you think?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I have to say I love the idea of not having frizzy hair and having it stay straight longer. BUT, I'm not so crazy about putting formaldehyde in my hair. However, to be honest, do any of us really care about what chemicals we put on our hair, or how bad they stink, as long as they do what they're supposed to.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I say this, as I haven't permed my hair in 11 years, and I just had one done yesterday.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Shhh... I haven't told my husband yet. :)Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-46110695283615258112013-03-19T12:18:00.000-07:002013-03-19T12:18:39.719-07:00To Wash or not to Wash<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Since I began this blog, I have looked for ways to repair hair and then keep that new pretty hair to stay pretty. Every article suggests something different, or they all suggest the same things. Some suggest weird things to try, and some suggest things that just don't make any sense.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">One of the biggest contested suggestions is: Washing Your Hair.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Some articles say you shouldn't wash it more than once every 7-10 days because too much washing will dry out your hair. Others say you should wash it more often to eliminate the gunky build-up caused by shampoos and conditioners.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If you're like me, you've tried everything. So. Have you tried washing vs. no washing? Which one has worked better for you?Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-9802272137890977092013-03-16T08:02:00.000-07:002013-03-16T08:02:19.250-07:00More tips on growing out your hair<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If you want to grow your hair out, like me, you've read every article under the sun. And they all say the same thing!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I did find an interesting article today over at The Lilly Mint Blog. Most of their suggestions have been stated over and over again, but there was one tip I found interesting. It goes against everything we've ever learned about washing our hair.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Condition your hair before your shampoo, this ensures there is no left over conditioner residue on your hair.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Has anyone heard of this tip before? Does it work?

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I love the idea of getting all the conditioner out, because conditioner weighs my hair down like crazy. But it goes against what we've been taught for ages. Might have to try this next time I wash my hair.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Do you have any tips for growing your hair out? Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867215583043046575.post-16124819471144588192013-03-14T01:30:00.001-07:002013-03-14T01:30:40.353-07:00The Perfect HairbrushIf you're like me, you've spent 38 years looking for the perfect hair brush, and still haven't found it. Every type of hair has a "preferred" hair brush. Then you read things on the net, go out and buy it, only to be told it's not the right brush.

I sort of came into hairbrushes when I had my hair cut "professionally" (as in high-end salon) a few years ago. I have about three sizes of the round brush with vents. I thought I loved them. Then a stylist said don't use one of them with wet hair because it destroys it. Ooops!

Now, I don't have much time, or patience for blowing out my hair. I'd love something that helps thin hair, maybe something that doesn't make my hair so oily, something easy, something AFFORDABLE.

http://hair.allwomenstalk.com/tips-for-choosing-the-right-hair-brush/ has an article about choosing the right hair brush. Most of it is a re-hash of every other article out there. There are two items that I'm intrigued by.

The Boar Bristle Brush. Does anyone have one? Does it really do nirvana like the articles claim, or is it really just for the thick haired girls and would probably destroy my fine, think hair?

The other is the rectangular brush with vents. I have one, but it doesn't seem to work any better than any other brush. Now, the thought of a square one with vents sounds a bit more my style, because you could dry more hair at one time.

What do you think? Is there a perfect brush? Have you found it? Care to share?Jennifer Irvinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10494917138591406615noreply@blogger.com0
