Autism Awareness Month

Hair Made Beautiful is working a autism  awareness campaign.  The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the Autism Society in April 1970.  World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2013.

In 1990 the autism rate was 1 in 10,000 school age children.  After an updated report released from the CDC, the number is now 1 in 54 students.

Autism awareness is something I am very passionate about.  I have twin sons who are on different ends of spectrum.  I spend a majority of my time battling with school systems, medical companies, and taking care of my boys.

I've seen the stares directed at me by mothers of "neurotypical" children when my children whine, climb under chairs, and yip.  I've felt the judgement.  With the numbers of autistic children rising, I want to educate people on autism.

Here's some very basic information on Autism from Autism Speaks.

Throughout the month of April, I will be holding a Lilla Rose Party at my Facebook site.  This will be a mystery hostess party, where anyone can win the hostess rewards at the end of the party.  How do you become eligible for the Mystery Hostess?  You get 1 ticket for each Blue Item you purchase during the party.

To show you the blue items and keep spreading information about Autism Awareness, every day during the party, I will be posting a picture of an item from Lilla Rose that has blue in it and qualifies for tickets to be the mystery hostess.  I will also be posting information about Autism and attempting to increase Autism Awareness.

Important Info to help you during the campaign:

How you can help?
  • Forward to everyone you know!  Encourage them to participate!
  • If you're a blogger and want to take part, please email me so you and your readers can take part as well.!

Yes, I can fall As Well....

I have been getting tired of my thin hair.  I've tried the foam rollers, that never quite dry your hair enough.  I decided if I am go out and represent Lilla Rose, I need thicker hair, hair easier for people to play with.

A few weeks ago, I succumbed to a body perm.  It's been really good in being able to pull my hair back quickly for shows and presentations.

But, I have encountered the problems that come from a chemical treatment in my hair....

...... Wait for it .....

Fried ends!

Does anyone have any really good deep conditioning treatments / ideas on how to get plenty moisture back in?

Do you practice good hair hygiene?

Now that's a question I would have never thought to ask myself before.

I found a very good article over at Boldsky.com about hair hygiene and every day things you can do to improve your hair.

One of their suggestions is to massage oil into your scalp.  I used to use hot oil all the time when I was younger, but over time I thought it was just a trend, and stopped buying it.  No one else ever stressed the importance of hot oil treatments.  According to the article, it's not so much oiling your hair that's important, as oiling your scalp.  By massaging it into your scalp, you help to dislodge skin particles, which will ultimately wind up as dandruff in your hair.

Another suggestion is to clean your hair tools.  I've always heard about cleaning your brush, but did you know you should also clean your combs?  That would have never have crossed my mind, but it is something I'll definitely be trying in the future.

There are a few other suggestions in the article, which make perfect sense, so you should definitely read the article.

So tell me, do you practice good hair hygiene?

Keratin Treatments

One of the big fads right now is Keratin.  All you hear is Keratin this and that.  There's even been a case on The People's Court about a failed Keratin treatment (That's when you know you've hit it big) :).

BUT, has anyone had one done?  If you have, what did you think?

I have to say I love the idea of not having frizzy hair and having it stay straight longer.  BUT, I'm not so crazy about putting formaldehyde in my hair.  However, to be honest, do any of us really care about what chemicals we put on our hair, or how bad they stink, as long as they do what they're supposed to.

I say this, as I haven't permed my hair in 11 years, and I just had one done yesterday.

Shhh... I haven't told my husband yet. :)

To Wash or not to Wash

Since I began this blog, I have looked for ways to repair hair and then keep that new pretty hair to stay pretty.  Every article suggests something different, or they all suggest the same things.  Some suggest weird things to try, and some suggest things that just don't make any sense.

One of the biggest contested suggestions is:  Washing Your Hair.

Some articles say you shouldn't wash it more than once every 7-10 days because too much washing will dry out your hair.  Others say you should wash it more often to eliminate the gunky build-up caused by shampoos and conditioners.

If you're like me, you've tried everything.  So.  Have you tried washing vs. no washing?  Which one has worked better for you?

More tips on growing out your hair

If you want to grow your hair out, like me, you've read every article under the sun.  And they all say the same thing!

I did find an interesting article today over at The Lilly Mint Blog.  Most of their suggestions have been stated over and over again, but there was one tip I found interesting.  It goes against everything we've ever learned about washing our hair.

Condition your hair before your shampoo, this ensures there is no left over conditioner residue on your hair.

Has anyone heard of this tip before?  Does it work?

I love the idea of getting all the conditioner out, because conditioner weighs my hair down like crazy.  But it goes against what we've been taught for ages.  Might have to try this next time I wash my hair.

Do you have any tips for growing your hair out?

The Perfect Hairbrush

If you're like me, you've spent 38 years looking for the perfect hair brush, and still haven't found it.  Every type of hair has a "preferred" hair brush.  Then you read things on the net, go out and buy it, only to be told it's not the right brush.

I sort of came into hairbrushes when I had my hair cut "professionally" (as in high-end salon) a few years ago.  I have about three sizes of the round brush with vents.  I thought I loved them.  Then a stylist said don't use one of them with wet hair because it destroys it. Ooops!

Now, I don't have much time, or patience for blowing out my hair.  I'd love something that helps thin hair, maybe something that doesn't make my hair so oily, something easy, something AFFORDABLE.

http://hair.allwomenstalk.com/tips-for-choosing-the-right-hair-brush/   has an article about choosing the right hair brush.  Most of it is a re-hash of every other article out there.  There are two items that I'm intrigued by.

The Boar Bristle Brush.   Does anyone have one?  Does it really do nirvana like the articles claim, or is it really just for the thick haired girls and would probably destroy my fine, think hair?

The other is the rectangular brush with vents.  I have one, but it doesn't seem to work any better than any other brush.  Now, the thought of a  square one with vents sounds a bit more my style, because you could dry more hair at one time.

What do you think?  Is there a perfect brush?  Have you found it?  Care to share?

Quick and Dirty Beauty Tricks

I was reading an article at WebMD on the 10 Best Speedy Hair and Makeup Tips.  http://www.webmd.com/healthy-beauty/features/10-best-speedy-hair-and-makeup-tricks

I like the ideas in the article, as these truly ARE speedy.  They're also not hard to do, which is great for people like us who have no time, and want to look presentable.

Their big suggestion for hair is "When you're strapped for time, do the T-zone blow-dry: down your part and around your hairline only. "As long as the front and top of your hair looks finished."

I can completely see this, as when people to talk to you, they're mainly looking at your face, so concentrate on the parts of your hair people will see.

Easy enough, right?

Blow dry Cream

What is blow-dry creme, you ask?

I've been asking myself that for five minutes since I first learned a product existed.  I'm sure you've heard of all the new products that you can spray on your hair before using a flat irons to help protect from the heat.  But blow-dry creme?

A blow-dry creme helps your hair dry faster, your brush glide smoother, and your hair stay straight and frizz free longer. Most are packed with nutrients, UV filters, heat protectors, and help repair damage.

I'm definitely on the lookout for some.  I need something I can use when I blow-dry that can help keep it from drying out, frizzing up, causing so much static my hair sticks to my face for a week, and hopefully help it stay fluffed up longer.

Has anyone used Blow-dry creme?  What do you think?
